This collection contains a diary kept by Board of Commissioners’ Assistant Charles Ashburner in Mckean and Elk Counties.  Information provided is date and time of entry, more brief descriptions of his daily activities and the names of persons whom he met from his departure from Philadelphia on Wednesday, July 12, 1876 to the afternoon of October 15, 1876. less

Accounts, 1781, A record of orders given to State Treasurer, David Rittenhouse, to pay a given amount to a person named. Listed are the amounts to more be paid, reason for payment, payees name and place of residence. Each order is signed and dated by the person giving the order (usually President Joseph Reed or Vice President William Moore.) Also included are receipts, signed by the person receiving the amount, attesting that they were paid, and specifying the date, sum of money handed out and who it was paid by. Accounts of Public Buildings and Grounds, A record of payment, ordered by the President or Vice President of the Supreme Executive Council, to various craftsmen and tradesmen for their supplies, labor, or skills used to build, repair or renovate state buildings or grounds. These projects included work on buildings, laying floors, bridge repair, building a library and courthouse, collecting wood for firewood, repairs made to clocks and ringing town bells. A ledger of accounts paid to carpenters for their work, materials, help in demolition, etc., is also present. Noted are the persons name, date of work, amount paid and a general description of the job accomplished. Accounts of the Commissioners Appointed to Settle the Connecticut-Pennsylvania Claims, A record of payment by the Supreme Executive Council to the Commissioners who worked to settle the Connecticut-Pennsylvania dispute. Payment was made to compensate agents and solicitors (lawyers) for expenses incurred traveling between states, temporary residency, daily expenses, and the procurement of documents to help with the case. Also noted are receipts given in payment for the above mentioned services. Receipts are dated, signed by payee (David Rittenhouse), list amount received and contain the recipients signature verifying that payment was made. Depreciation Pay Interest Reports of the Comptroller General, A record of orders identifying persons entitled to interest due on depreciation certificates of pay. Each order names the recipient, date interest was due, the soldiers rank and company, the principle amount of the certificate and the amount of interest. Also included are lists of men who qualified for depreciation pay, amount of principle and lists of men who actually applied for it. These lists also record the name of office issuing the qualifiers, the date and the signature of parties involved. Report of the Auditors of Accounts of the Depreciation Pay of the Pennsylvania Line, A record of M. Nicholsons audit of the depreciation pay given citizens and soldiers in keeping with the General Assemblys Act of 1781. Included is an explanation of who received payment, what was paid, where payment was received and why it was given. Nicholsons report also includes a list of persons overpaid in this distribution, place of residence and amount paid. less

Images of a collection of loose copies of receipts and reports written out and filed by the Committee of Safety from February 11, 1775-July 31, 1776 more and undated. Information provided on the receipts include the name of the recipient or payee, date of transaction, amount, reason for payment and signature verifying that payment was made. Also contained within this collection are reports for the Province of Pennsylvania, where the Continental Congress reported its expenditures. On these reports, information can be found about the payee or recipient, the place money was dispensed to, the purpose of the payment and the amount paid. less

Images of a collection of the receipts of the Council of Safety from July 20, 1776 - April 16, 1777. The loose receipts in this collection more contain specific information which includes the date of transaction, persons involved, the reason for the transaction and the amount of money or specific description of items exchanged. Information contained in these receipts include orders from officers for men, supplies, rations or meals, guns and ammunition, money paid to soldiers or private citizens for goods or services, inventory lists of stores and Stewards stores aboard the ship Montgomery, lists of settled accounts, reimbursement for women in private homes that gave soldiers meals, money paid to clean, mend, appraise, buy and sell guns, a gunlock factory account, money given to provide for families of militiamen, and reports by citizens of damages done to their homes when enemy military troops were quartered in their private homes during their absence. In cases where the military is mentioned, the receipt lists the purpose of the transaction as well as the name of the company, commanding officer and occasionally where that particular group of men were marching. less

Images of receipts of the Second Council of Safety from October 14, 1777 through December 9, 1777. Each receipt contains the name of the person giving more or receiving payment, the purpose of the transaction, the date of transaction and an authorizing signature. The receipts are primarily for the appropriation of food for horses for military officers and regiments, work done by civilians for the province, money given to the council for various debts owed, and payment of expenses for express riders. less

Images of a record of the receipts of the Board of War from March 14, 1777, through September 24, 1777. The receipts document money given out. more Each receipt lists the name, date, amount and reason for the transaction. Also included is the location of the Board of War, in the Pennsylvania War office in Philadelphia, and a signature of a member of the board, sometimes even stating the persons position. Also included is correspondence of a private citizen requesting a settlement of accounts with the War Board. less

Images of records dealing primarily with the business of the Committee which was the removal of supplies and goods from the city (primarily Philadelphia and surrounding more areas) before enemy troops entered Pennsylvania. Found within the record are signed receipts saying that the Committee had complied with the order from Congress to remove goods and supplies, and one receipt specifically mentioning that one person did not receive compensation but followed through with the order. Each of these receipts are dated, signed, and give names of parties involved, and descriptions of what was handed over or delivered to the Committee. less

Published and unpublished reports submitted to the Governor by the Pennsylvania Historical Commission concerning the activities of the Commission, funds appropriated by the legislature for the more various Commission programs, and historical markers erected by the Commission. These include the First Report of the Historical Commission of Pennsylvania (Lancaster: 1915), the Fiftieth Anniversary Reprint of the First Report of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission (Lancaster: 1964), the Second Report of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission (1918), the Third Report of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission (1922), The Marking of Historical Sites of Early Pennsylvania (Fourth Report of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission) (Harrisburg: 1926), and the Fifth Report of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission (1931). The second, third and fourth reports contain the texts of numerous historical markers and the fifth report contains updates on archaeological excavations at Clemson's Island in the Susquehanna River near Halifax in Dauphin County, the Book Mound near Academia in Juniata County, and at Safe Harbor in Lancaster County. The Sixth Report of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission, 1931-1937 (Harrisburg: 1937) is represented only by a set of photocopies and the reports for 1938 and 1944 are typescript drafts. Also included are biennial reports, bulletins, activities reports, and special reports to the Governor of the accomplishments of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission. A record of the 34,526 names of Pennsylvania veterans appearing on Pennsylvania monuments. Prepared from a record in the Pennsylvania State Library on February 7, 1958 more that was originally compiled by the United States Department of the Interior. This collection is part of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs which is responsible for administering the Pennsylvania National Guard, and administers various programs of assistance to veterans. less

This collection contains a register, arranged chronologically by date received, of human cadavers received by the Anatomical Board to be distributed to medical and dental facilities more for research. Information provided for each cadaver includes name, gender, color, age, place of birth, marital status, and occupation, date received, date and cause of death, physician's name, where received from and delivered to, tag number, whether cut or uncut, condition, and the claimed, substitute, or buried tag number. In addition, there is a monthly consolidated report of receipts from institutions giving the total number of bodies, the number of cut and uncut bodies, the number of white or black males and females, the number or bodies in good, bad and fair condition, the number of claimed, substitute, and buried cut and uncut bodies, and occasional remarks regarding each institution providing cadavers to the Anatomical Board. less

Annual reports filed with the Department of Internal Affairs by passenger and street railway companies.  Information provided is date of report, name of company, names and more residences of officers, location of general offices, history of organization and construction, capital stock, debt, and a description of the characteristics of the line such as number of car houses, sheds, stables, depots, and first and second class passenger cars together with the capacity of the cars and the number of cars propelled by electricity, horses, and mules.  Also given are the number of trips per day, the number of miles run each day, average time consumed in passing over the road and the material of the foundation upon which the rails were laid.  Finally, there is a monthly statement of the number of passengers carried, rate of fare, expenses, receipts, summary of payments, general balance sheet, a statement of stock and dividends, and an account of important changes made during the year. Images of a record of appellate cases in the Supreme Court, Western District. Cases deal with issues under the Court's mandatory and discretionary jurisdiction. Cases falling more within the Court's mandatory jurisdiction dealt with capital punishment, questions of constitutionality, finance and revenue, elections, and others. Cases falling within the Court's discretionary jurisdiction included cases where two intermediate courts had opposing decisions or cases that posed open questions of law, among others. Entries for each case list: the plaintiff (appellant) and defendant (appellee); the names of the attorneys appearing for the parties; the county and the lower courts from which the appellate cases arose; a chronological listing of the documents filed and proceedings held in the case; and the Court's subsequent decision or orders. Justices delivering the opinions are often noted, and from 1795 to 1836, the name of the prothonotary recording the case is entered. During the period 1894-1919, many of the dockets contain statistical summaries concerning the number and types of cases processed, and from 1930 to 1965, penciled notations are found that refer to the published cases and opinions of the Supreme Court in the Pennsylvania State Reports. A reference number that indicates when the case was recorded as having been argued in the Court Minute Books appears from 1935 onwards. Docket sheets dating after 2000 were printed from an electronic database and may contain a report date postdating the docket date. Images of a record of applications submitted to the Supreme Executive Council by persons requesting permission to pass through enemy lines. The type of information recorded more differs with each document. Most applications are dated with the petitioners name and reason for request to cross into enemy territory listed. On some occasions, more information is provided such as the individuals entire name, names of other party members also making the trip, place of birth and age as well as particulars about children or the death of a spouse or family member. Pre-printed forms are also included, signed by members of the Supreme Executive Council, granting the pass, the amount paid for the pass, persons receiving the pass, the date pass was granted, and the stipulations of the pass which often involved never returning to the state, or being required to apply for a reentry pass. less

Images of a record of political appointments and documents pertaining to the process of appointing individuals to political positions. It contains letters addressed to the Council more stating a position has been created or vacated and needs to be filled, letters suggesting qualified candidates, and letters of recommendation and character by references supporting a candidate. Letters state the date of the petition, the petitioner and senders name (if it was sent as a reference), place of origin of the letter, the petitioners experience, and vouchers for the petitioners character. Also found are signed, sealed contracts signed by members of council spelling out to the people appointed the exact nature of the position. Provided is information concerning the position filled, a description of what the position will entail, mention of salary, date of appointment and signatures of Council members. less

The documents within this series were extracted from their original series files in 1925 due to their unique historical value. They contain valuable autographs of national more or state figures, including such notables as William Penn, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, Henry Knox, James Madison, Henry Clay, Dr. Benjamin Rush, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, Jared Ingersoll, General Peter Muhlenberg, William Bingham, Gouvernoeur Morris, James Wilson, General Anthony Wayne, and Gilbert Stuart. Some of the documents contained in this series fill major gaps in the original series and include a land grant of 1683, inventory sheets of real estate for attained citizens, papers relating to various court cases, depositions of Benjamin Franklin and Henry Clay, rules of court, petitions, affidavits, and recognizances. Data found on the documents differ with each case, but usually the bankrupt persons name, occupation, and amount of debt appears. Images of rough notes of minutes from the meetings of the Supreme Executive Council. Entries document events of the meetings, order of the day, mention of more business put before the Council. Items pertaining to the business of the Council are also included within the volumes, letters, petitions, payment of funds for various people and groups, reports by Council Committees, orders for money, mentions of court cases, resolutions of the General Assembly, motions of the Supreme Executive Council and applications for military appointments. less

A daily record of the Board of Appraisers convened by an act of the General Assembly to appraise all damages and losses associated with the impressment more of horses and supplies by the Anderson Cavalry in September 1862 and General Stuart's rebel raid one month later. The Board met at several key locations in the southern counties (including Harrisburg, Chambersburg, and Gettysburg) from November 6, 1863 to November 25, 1864. Claimants would come before the Board to present their testimonies and cases regarding their loss of property. Once all claims were reviewed and accurately adjusted, the appraisers submitted their findings to the Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas for final review before an official report was sent to the Governor. Included in the minutes are the numbers of the claims that were addressed each day in session and any miscellaneous transactions that were completed. Images are arranged chronologically by the session dates of the Board. This collection is part of the Office of the Auditor General which audits the fiscal affairs for the Commonwealth. less

This collection includes quarterly meeting minutes and agendas of the Fish Commission and its successor the Fish and Boat Commission. The minutes document approval of past more minutes and contain committee reports on boating legislation, law enforcement, propagation, special regulations, as well as access and property maintenance. Transcripts of discussions on management of fisheries, conservation regulations, and rules and regulations for fishing and boating are also present. Appendices often contain budget reports, resolutions, legislation and copies of the Pennsylvania Code & Bulletin. Agendas (1993-1998) contain briefing sheets consisting of summaries, commentaries, and recommendations on issues for consideration. Also present are statements of policy (1969-1970) and a briefing booklet on the Black Bass issue (May 30, 1995). Meeting minutes from 1924-1954 are only available on microfilm/or digitally. less

Transcripts of bonds posted by office holders with the sitting Governors as surety for their carrying out of their responsibilities. Information provided is name of person more posting bond, office for which bond was posted, date of bond, amount of bond, name of Governor, conditions specified by bond, and names of witnesses. Records are arranged chronologically by date of entry. Indexed internally, alphabetically by name of office holder. The Department of State is headed by the Secretary of the Commonwealth, whose office was established under the Constitution of 1776. Duties of the Department of State include oversight of the Bureau of Commissions, Elections and Legislation which is responsible for issuing commissions to all state appointed and elected officials, maintaining election returns, and recording and filing legislation enacted by the General Assembly.  less

Images of a record of the contracts for men commissioned as privateers to capture British ships and cargos for the Continental Congress. Each contract is preprinted more with appropriate information filled in. This kind of information includes, date of contract, names of the privateer commissioned, name of the commander of the vessel, type of vessel, name of vessel, name of the owner of the vessel and from where he originated, what kind of guns the vessel carried, number of crew members and the penalty charge to the privateer if the contract were broken. Also contained with this record are a few handwritten applications by persons wishing to be commissioned by the Continental Congress as privateers, followed by their printed contract. less

Bonds, assignments, contracts, acts, titles and similar types of records relating to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, General State Authority, State Highway and Bridge Authority, and State more Treasurer. Also included are 12 deeds for the Capitol grounds and certified copies of joint resolutions proposing amendments to the U.S. Constitution concerning the terms of office of the president, womens suffrage, and the prohibition of the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. The records include a copy of legislation passed by the General Assembly between September 30, 1775 and the American Revolution, copies of legislation passed at by the United States Congress meeting at New York on March 4, 1789, a contract between the Commonwealth and Francis Shunk Brown dated July 5, 1929 concerning a refund of taxes paid 1866-1868, an assignment of copyrights by James Thurman Pearson, Jr., Daniel Garber, Alice Kent Stoddard, and George Harding, and the General State Authority bond issue for 1949. Records are unarranged. The Department of State is headed by the Secretary of the Commonwealth, whose office was established under the Constitution of 1776. The purpose of the road was to launch a military expedition against the French occupation of the Ohio River Valley. This series contains applications for damage claims submitted by citizens who suffered losses during the burning of Chambersburg on July 30, 1864. The applications are itemized more accounts of real and personal property lost by each claimant, assigning to each item a monetary value. Sometimes included with the applications are affidavits of witnesses to the claims, a record of the award allowed the claimant by the 1866 Board of Appraisers and the subsequent 1871 Commission to re-adjudicate claims. Chambersburg entries have a record of the pro rata payment given to each claimant in conjunction with the 1866 state appropriation of $500,000 for the relief of Chambersburg citizens who lost property due to the rebel invasion. The original county records survey database was located on the Department of education mainframe and this information was then converted to seven silver negative microfiche and to four negative rolls of 35mm microfilm. Printed versions were also placed in binders. The microfiche, microfilm and binders are all accessible in the search room. The information was collected for the National Historical Publications and Records Commission funded Pennsylvania County Records Survey and Planning Study, 1984-1985. Lists from the Board of Medical Examiners naming those who passed the medical examination addressed to Governor Andrew Curtin. Information provided about each applicant includes name, more town and county of residence, age, rank assigned, and the standard score achieved by each candidate. The score was determined by a careful consideration of written answers provided by candidates to prepared examination questions. Those who achieved a standard score of 7-10 were judged qualified to be surgeons and those achieving a score of 5-6 were qualified as assistant surgeons. Any candidate achieving a score of less than 5 was deemed unfit for any medical post. Also found in the series are separate lists of the names of surgeons and assistant surgeons together with the names of the military units to which they were assigned. Accounts of expenses incurred for the first geological survey of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The sequentially numbered expenses for 1837-1840 most often cover freight charges, food, more postage, stationary, and other supplies and generally provide the name of the person receiving payment, the nature of the expense incurred, the amount paid, and the signature of the person receiving payment. Also found for these years are a large number of loose receipts for expenditures paid. Suspended in 1840 due to inadequate funding, the geological survey was resumed when the state legislature appropriated an additional $32,000 for the purpose in 1851. These records provide a listing of those who were recipients of more the Korean War bonus, and therefore a listing of Pennsylvanians who served in the Korean War. While they are the most complete records of Korean War veterans in the archives, they are not fully inclusive as some veterans may not have applied for the bonus. They provide the veterans name, serial number, number of months of domestic and foreign service, and occasionally the home address of the recipient. Militia Returns (1777-1790), A record of militia returns for counties in Pennsylvania sent to the Supreme Executive Council so that commissions could be made out and statistics recorded accordingly. Images of a record of the meetings of the Second Council of Safety, established and working as a temporary governmental authority during the British invasion of more eastern Pennsylvania in 1777. All meetings were held in Lancaster, Pennsylvania from October 17, 1777 through December 4, 1777. The purpose for the creation and work of the Second Council of Safety is clearly stated in an introductory general proclamation. Business discussed in meetings included warnings by the council to the general public against direct dealings with or aid to enemy troops currently in Pennsylvania, dealings with citizens recanting their allegiance to the United States in the presence of invading and occupying troops, the appropriation of personal goods from citizens to prevent them from falling into enemy hands, appointment of local citizens to be County Commissioners to further proportions of the military to be called out and to furnish military provisions, levying moneys advanced for substitutes, what to do with men who would neither join or send a substitute into the army, punishment for citizens who disobeyed Council Orders of non-fraternization with the enemy, settlement of prices for liquors and goods, permission given to commissioners to seize munitions, goods and food provisions from those who had aided the enemy or refused to take an oath of allegiance, appointment of Commissioners to carry out the afore mentioned orders, consideration of the issue of an Indian incursion into Westmoreland County, defense of frontiers, arrests of civilians dealing with the enemy, mention of hope of Spain and France helping in the American independence movement, raising of companies of men for militias, commissioners gathering arms, blankets and clothing, and lastly, the formal extinguishing of the Councils power when it was no longer needed. less

Images of a loose collection of the draft copies of the minutes and other papers concerning the business of the Committee of Safety from August 2,1775-July more 3, 1776 and undated. Besides providing the first drafts of the minutes and editorial changes, the series also includes papers and items not present in the final copies of the minutes. Each of the drafts of the minutes are similar to the format used in the final version, listing the date and location of each meeting and the members present. These papers seem to be edited with large sections of text marked through. Contained within the minutes are smaller documents, notes to or written by Committee members, certificates, drafts of proposed motions, letters and letter drafts, and some oaths of allegiance. A daily record of the Chambersburg Board of Appraisers, created to appraise all damages associated with the Rebel invasion of July 1864. The board met at more the Franklin County Courthouse from March 14th to April 21st and listened to claimant and witness testimony regarding their lost property. When all claimants were heard, the board decided how much to award each claim, and then turned its adjudications, along with the claim applications, over to the Auditor General. Included in the minutes are the numbers of the claims that were addressed each day and miscellaneous transactions completed. Also present are a set of rules the appraisers were to follow in judging the claims, a certified letter outlining the appointment of the appraisers, and a copy of the Act of Assembly that created the Board. Contains approximately thirty discharge certificates for recruits who served with federal (Army, Navy, and Marine Corps) or state (Pennsylvania Militia or National Guard) military units. Generally more the documents give the names, ranks, birthplaces, ages (at enlistment), occupations, races, heights, and hair and eye colors, the dates and places where enlisted and discharged, the reasons for discharge, the terms of enlistment, and the branch of the service and unit to which each soldier was assigned. Some certificates were typed in the Twentieth Century, apparently to provide veterans with a service record for pension purposes. Various documents relating to stocks, securities, and currency once maintained by the State Treasurer. Documents include: a power of attorney covering assignment of Commonwealth certificates of more stock issued pursuant to Act 202 of 1839; correspondence relating to the transfer of stock and payment of dividends from the Sea Girt Land Investment Company and the Spring Lake Beach Improvement Company; and securities, currency, and supporting records turned over to the Treasury Department pursuant to Act 80 of 1895, which authorized and directed the Auditor General to release to the State Treasurer certain securities and currencies held by the Auditor General for the redemption of such outstanding notes of the Downington Bank and the National Bank of Pennsylvania at Pottsville, both of which banks surrendered their charters in 1864 and 1866 respectively. The securities and currencies were to be held by the State Treasurer for the redemption of any possible notes of these banks which might be presented for redemption. Images are unarranged. Roll 3546 depicts the record book of the Collector of Provincial Excise Tax Arthur Patterson for Lancaster County for the years 1747 and 1748. This excise tax was collected on wine, rum, brandy and other spirits under the provisions of an Act passed on May 26, 1744. Information provided is date excise was collected, amount collected, and name of person from whom collected and also contains notations regarding cider payments made in 1766 and 1767. Naturalization lists created under the provisions of the Act of Parliament passed in the 13th year of the reign of his Royal Majesty King George the more Second entitled "Act for Naturalizing such Foreign Protestants, and Others Therein Mentioned, as are Settled or Shall Settle in any of His Majesty's Colonies in America." The records commence at the session of the Supreme Court held at Philadelphia for the Province of Pennsylvania presided over by Jeremiah Langhorne, Thomas Graeme, and Thomas Griffits on September 25-27, 1740 O.S. Under the provisions of this Act, foreigners seeking to be naturalized must have resided in the colonies for at least seven years, been absent from the colonies no more than two months at a time during those seven years, and produce certificates of taking the sacrament of the Lord's Supper in a Protestant or Reformed congregation located within the Province within the preceding three months. Each applicant was then required to take the prescribed oaths and repeat the declaration prescribed in the Act. A record of Oaths of Allegiance to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, renouncing allegiance to the British Crown or her armies. Included within this record are lists more of men who took the Oath of Allegiance, listed in order by date. A published history of the expedition of the Baron de Longueuil in 1739 that covered over 1,600 miles of lakes, trails and rivers from Montreal to more the vicinity of present day Memphis, Tennessee. This was the first large European military expedition to pass over the Chautauqua-Allegheny corridor, and also the first to pass through northwestern Pennsylvania. Occurring ten years before Celoron's expedition that installed lead plates to establish French claims in the region, the Longueuil operation was part of a campaign against the Chickasaw Indians living along the northern Mississippi whose presence threatened communications between Louisiana and French Canada. This collection, arranged chronologically, contains the applications submitted by motion picture film companies requesting the Board of Censors to review their films. The application gives the more title of the film; the name of the manufacturer; the names of the leading actors and actresses; the number and length of reels; the style of film and indicates whether the film was approved without changes, approved with eliminations, or condemned outright. If the film was approved with eliminations, an Eliminations Form is attached and lists the specific changes that needed to be made. There is often also present a Memorandum of Changes form that reveals when requested eliminations or changes were made and when the Board approved the film. The collection contains Minutes and Orders of Business relative to the meetings of the State Forestry Reservation Commission and the State Forest Commission. Convened in Harrisburg more on December 14, 1899 under the terms of an act to secure state forestry reservations passed on May 28, 1899, the Commission was chaired by Forestry Commissioner Joseph T. Rothrock of West Chester, and also consisted of Deputy Secretary of Internal Affairs Isaac Brown of Corry, President of the State Board of Health John Fulton of Johnstown, as well as A. C. Hopkins of Lock Haven and Albert Lewis of Bear Creek in Luzerne County who were appointed by the governor. Renamed the State Forest Commission in September 1919, the format of the minutes remaining unchanged. The Orders of Business duplicate the minutes, seeming to serve as a rough draft for their finished versions. Included are the names and salaries of numerous Department employees, camp site receipts for all State Forests, general receipts, operation receipts, correspondence, land issues, applications to the bureaus relative to various issues, lease proposals, etc. Examples of specific types of data present include: salaries incurred for forest officers, scientific and other necessary employees; a listing for a camp site receipt of $8.00 charged to W.L. Fox at Delaware State Forest; a listing for a camp site lease to W.T. Morrow of Altoona for site #50154, Jackson Township, Huntingdon County ($7.00); and an application by R.G. A history of the Venango Trail prepared by the Works Progress Administration and edited by Sylvester K. Stevens and Donald H. Kent. The Venango Trail consisted more of the Presque Isle portage that connected Lake Erie with the headwaters of French Creek, thence extended from Lake Le Boeuf to the junction of French Creek and the Allegheny River, and from the Allegheny-French Creek junction to the Ohio River. It was long a major highway for the Indians of the Six Nations and also proved an important trade route for such European Indian traders as George Croghan. Colonel George Washington followed this corridor on his fateful mission to Fort Le Boeuf in 1754 and it was by means of this route that the French subsequently attempted to defend Fort Duquesne and Fort Michault during the French and Indian War. Included are copies of maps prepared by Joseph Gaspard Chaussegras de Lery in 1755 and a table giving distances in perches and feet of landmarks along the trail. "Transcripts and translations of important historical documents prepared by writers employed by the Works Progress Administration relating to the Frontier Forts and Trails Survey. Information provided more is title of document, source from which transcribed, date and author of the original document, project work number, and the transcription or translation of the text. Among the transcripts and translations are the writings of Abiel Holmes, Andrew Ellicott, The American Gazetteer by Jedidiah Morse (1804), American State Papers on Military Affairs (1823-1829), and the British Museum's Series 21631-21660 "Additional Manuscripts" containing the papers of Henry Bouquet (1756-1765). Also present are transcripts of the Samuel Haldimand Papers at the Library of Congress (1757-1765), the Oil City Oil Exchange Correspondence at Drake Well Museum (1876-1898) and the Townsend Collection of the Seneca Oil Company (1858-1882), Erie County historical papers (undated), and records of the Harmony Society (1798-1893). Finally, there are transcripts relating to the Cornplanter tract and other Indian records (1745-1905), Sir William Johnson's Papers at the New York Historical Society (1758-1762), and the Journal of Duke de la Rochefoucault Liancourt who visited the French Asylum colony in 1799. Microfilm roll 1131 covers the journal of Joseph Gaspard Chaussegras de Lery, 1754-1755, and provides a window on French activities in northwestern Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War. Chaussegros de Lery accompanied the Baron de Longueuil's expedition from Canada to Fort Assumption, sketching the route from Niagara Falls to the Mississippi River. His father, Gaspard Chaussegros de Lery, was the chief engineer of French Canada from 1716 and built Fort Niagara in 1726 and 1727. The younger Joseph Gaspard Chaussegros de Lery was commissioned an assistant engineer on January 1, 1739 and the map based on his survey was the first reasonably accurate map of the Ohio valley. The translation by Quebec Archivist W. Pierre-Georges Roy was made from the printed version that appeared in Repport de l'archaviste de le Province de Quebec pour 1928-1929. Transcripts of the minutes of wardens appointed for the Port of Philadelphia under "Act for Appointing Wardens for the Port of Philadelphia and for Regulating Pilots, more plying in the River and Bay of Delaware, and the Price of Pilotage (sic) to and from the said Port." The wardens issued certificates to persons qualified to act as pilots on ships and vessels in the Delaware River and Bay. Information provided is date of meeting, names of those present, and a description of the business transacted. The minutes reveal information concerning obstructions in the Delaware River and Bay and daily entries illuminate routine operations of the port such as maintenance of lighthouses, collection of fees, and payment of wages.
