Images of Certificates of ship masters certifying the name of the ship master, ownership of the vessel, and certifying that no foreigners have any share in more the property of the vessel. Also present are bonds to the king by the ship master and merchant attesting to the same. Information provided on the certificates is name of the ship master, type of vessel, name of vessel, where anchored, ship burthen in tons, number of any guns mounted on the vessel, number of crew members, number of crew members who were His Majesty's subjects, where the vessel was bound and also the next port after that to which bound, name of naval officer by whom surveyed, and date of certificate. The bonds to the king give the date of the bond, name of the shipmaster, name of the vessel, name of merchant providing bond, amount of the bond, and date of the bond. less

Images of lists of attorneys granted permission to practice in the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. In order to practice at this level, attorneys were required to more have a sponsor. Information given includes names of attorney and sponsor, and date of admission. From 1903 on, either the county of residence or the place of admission of the attorney are also noted. At the end of the first volume (1742-1902) is a "List of attorneys of the Supreme Court of the Province of Pennsylvania admitted at various times previous to the Revolution," which is noted as having been copied from "Sheriff's Deed Book B," and which shows the names of the attorneys, and their dates of admission. Images of reports, sketches, correspondence, and other files relative to fatalities at mining facilities in both the anthracite and bituminous coal regions, excluding the years 1936-1937, more 1964-1968 for anthracite and 1950-1951 for bituminous. The reports are very detailed, presenting a wide-variety of information concerning all aspects of fatal incidents that occurred both inside and outside of particular Pennsylvania collieries. A report from the Department of Mines is nearly always present, many times accompanied by an additional one from the Department of Labor and Industry's Bureau of Workmen's Compensation. The template of the main Department of Mines synopsis, and the information given, changed slightly over time. There were also different forms for different types of accidents, such as a specific form for deaths resulting from a fall of rock, one for "general" inside or outside fatalities, etc. These reports dovetail with the accident registers for both the anthracite and bituminous districts in Record Group 45, which have been converted into databases and are available online. These databases should be the first resource used by researchers when looking for information relative to a miner who suffered a fatal mining-related accident. If the name of a fatally injured miner is found on the database, this series of accident reports can be consulted for detailed information on both the miner and the accident. less

Images of three types of certification recordings for mine foremen and assistant foremen: certificate books, certificate receipt books, and registers. The certificate books contain copies of more the certificates issued to eligible applicants, spanning the years 1886-1923 for foremen and 1891-1940 for assistant foremen. Information provided includes the certificate number and date issued; the name, residence, age, and place of birth of the applicant; length and nature of the applicant's service; mine district; and the report's number and date. The certificate receipt books, which cover the years from 1938-1963, contain only the receipt portion, not the actual certificate, and show the applicant's name, age, place of birth and length of service; the examining board's name; certificate number and date issued; and the applicant's test score. Finally, the registers list the name, residence, place of birth, and age of the applicant; the report's number and date; the certificate number and date issued; and length and nature of the applicant's service. Images of a record of appellate cases in the Supreme Court, Western District. Cases deal with issues under the Court's mandatory and discretionary jurisdiction. Cases falling more within the Court's mandatory jurisdiction dealt with capital punishment, questions of constitutionality, finance and revenue, elections, and others. Cases falling within the Court's discretionary jurisdiction included cases where two intermediate courts had opposing decisions or cases that posed open questions of law, among others. Entries for each case list: the plaintiff (appellant) and defendant (appellee); the names of the attorneys appearing for the parties; the county and the lower courts from which the appellate cases arose; a chronological listing of the documents filed and proceedings held in the case; and the Court's subsequent decision or orders. Justices delivering the opinions are often noted, and from 1795 to 1836, the name of the prothonotary recording the case is entered. During the period 1894-1919, many of the dockets contain statistical summaries concerning the number and types of cases processed, and from 1930 to 1965, penciled notations are found that refer to the published cases and opinions of the Supreme Court in the Pennsylvania State Reports. A reference number that indicates when the case was recorded as having been argued in the Court Minute Books appears from 1935 onwards. Docket sheets dating after 2000 were printed from an electronic database and may contain a report date postdating the docket date. This collection contains a record, arranged in numerical order by application number, of individuals licensed as chiropodists from October 26, 1956 to August 14, 1974. Information more provided includes the name and address of the chiropodist; the date of graduation; the name and location of the institution which granted the degree; the date of application and the application number; the date that the license was issued and the license number; and the date that the license fee was paid and the amount. There is space available for recording the person's age and date of examination but it is left blank. As needed, a remarks section was used to indicate the date that the chiropodist died. This series continues under the Department of Education in series 22.53 Record of Licenses Issued to Chiropodists covering 1914-1956, these records are also digitally available. less

Images of the results of dust surveys, taken at various coal mines across Pennsylvania, are included in this series. Included are survey reports, miscellaneous information concerning more the mines surveyed, and associated correspondence. Also present are occasional listings of employment data, as well as details relative to mining techniques employed at mines surveyed. Images of a record of cases brought before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in the Middle District. Information provided about each case may include names of more parties; a brief description of the case; an explanation regarding its origin; by what means it reached the Supreme Court (by writ of error, certiorari or appeal); where the case was filed; and amounts of court costs incurred. After 1810, the final decision of the court is also noted. The dockets also contain entries giving the location of the court for various sessions, and the names of the justices who presided; as well as notations of adjournment motions, rules adopted concerning payment made to the Court, and other court actions. less

Images of executive correspondence of the governors of Pennsylvania maintained by the Secretary of the Commonwealth. Subject matter is wide ranging and covers all aspects of more official gubernatorial activity. In addition to the loose documents, the correspondence covering 1861-1866 includes the Curtin Letterbooks, two volumes of gubernatorial correspondence, both incoming and outgoing, focusing on military matters. Correspondents include Simon Cameron, Edwin Stanton, and Abraham Lincoln. An unpublished descriptive inventory and index for the Curtin Letterbooks are available in the Pennsylvania State Archives Search Room. This group of certificate stubs and cards is grouped into four separate batches as follows: Miners' Certificate Cards and Stubs, which date from 1937 and 1938; more Machine Runner and Cutting, Loading, and Drilling Machine Operators Certificate Stubs, dating from 1938 through the late 1950s, possibly the early 1960s; Miners' Certificate Stubs which date from the late 1930s; and Miners' Certificate Stubs dating from 1939 through roughly 1965. The bulk of the stubs and cards date from 1937 through 1955, and all provide excellent genealogical data on rank-and-file miners and other mine workers who labored in the bituminous fields of western Pennsylvania. Specific information found in each batch of material includes the following: Miner's Certificate Cards and Stubs, 1937, 1938 (81 boxes): name of miner, age of miner (not found on all cards), address of miner, certification number, application number, date of issue, employer, and mine number. Index cards constitute the bulk of this series, however, for some reason the run of index cards becomes a run of certificate stubs after Box 68, beginning with the stub for John Sagan. These stubs are stylistically different from the ones described below, but convey the same type of information; Machine Runner and Cutting, Loading, and Drilling Machine Operators Certificate Stubs, 1930s-1960s (12 boxes): stub number, name of miner, address of miner, place of birth, date of birth, mine where employed at the time of exam, company name, mine experience (some stubs provide a specific number of years of machine experience), place of examination, date of examination, date of certificate issuance, and bituminous inspection district number. Miner's Certificate Stubs, late 1930s (6 boxes): stub number, name of miner, address of miner, place of birth, date of birth, mine where employed at the time of exam, company name, mine experience, place of examination, date of examination, and date of certificate issuance; Miner's Certificate Stubs, 1939-1965 (25 boxes): stub number, name of miner, address of miner, place of birth, date of birth, mine where employed at the time of exam, company name, mine experience (in years), place of examination, date of examination, date of certificate issuance, and bituminous inspection district number. Also present are twenty-six microfilm rolls. All refer to the bituminous coal region of western Pennsylvania, with the first sixteen rolls apparently duplicating the Miners' Certificate Cards (1937, 1938) and the last ten containing original data, specifically: four rolls of Mine Foreman certification stubs and certificates, dating from roughly 1939-1966 (bulk 1940s), organized numerically by mining district then alphabetically by surname; four rolls of Mine Foreman certification stubs and certificates, dating from roughly 1966-1987 (bulk 1970s), organized numerically by mining district then alphabetically by surname; and two rolls of Shot Firer Certifications, 1938-1983, arranged alphabetically by surname. The cards and stubs on these rolls are NOT in precise alphabetical order; it is recommended to check throughout the run of a specific surname letter if an individual cannot be found in the normal alphabetical sequence. less

Archive inventories, typed manuscripts, and correspondence relating to inventories conducted at each of the county archives by the Division of Community Service Programs of the Pennsylvania more Historical Survey. Maps, blueprints and historical background of archive facilities are occasionally included. Images of investigations into health hazards and pollution complaints at various industrial plants throughout the state are included in this series. Records span numerous years for more some facilities, such as a thirty-year run of data for the Lebanon Steel Foundry. Information includes: data on medical problems for individuals caused by hazardous working conditions (with names of the individuals given in a few instances), specifics on the types on machinery utilized at specific plants, employment statistics, survey records, inspection results and related laboratory reports, as well as descriptions of miscellaneous industrial processes. less

Serial number indexes and compensation application batch sheets from the Pennsylvania Korean War Bonus Program. These records provide a listing of those who were recipients of more the Korean War bonus, and therefore a listing of Pennsylvanians who served in the Korean War. While they are the most complete records of Korean War veterans in the archives, they are not fully inclusive as some veterans may not have applied for the bonus. They provide the veterans name, serial number, number of months of domestic and foreign service, and occasionally the home address of the recipient. A serial number is necessary to search these records. The original bonus files no longer exist. This collection is part of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs which is responsible for administering the Pennsylvania National Guard, and administers various programs of assistance to veterans. less

Images depicting the documentation of actions of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, recording decisions made during Commission meetings. Topics include: resolutions; legal issues; expansions, including the Philadelphia, more Western, Delaware River, and Northeastern Extension; accounting procedures; bonds; budgets; contracts; employee listings with salary; and billboards. Each folder also contains material relevant to the meeting, such as fare charts and correspondence with contractors or other state agencies, such as Bureau of Public Roads. This series contains meeting minutes of the State Veterans Commission, as well as meeting handouts, statistical reports done by the Commission and budget reports. Also present more are correspondence and other Commission administrative materials. The incoming and outgoing correspondence is primarily with officers of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and other state and federal veterans agencies. This collection contains applications made to, and proclamations issued by, the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons. Grouped into applications and proclamations and then arranged chronologically by date more of action. The applications volumes provide brief narrative case histories and recommendations for pardons or commutations and whether the pardons or commutations were granted. Volume 1 covering the period 1874-1877 provides reasons why the Pardon Board made its recommendations while for the period 1882-1930 records of commutation actions are included. The last volume covering the period 1931-1934 contains mostly commutation records with only a few pardon actions. The proclamation volumes provide the Board's recommendations and reasons for its judgments. less

This collection contains original drawings executed in the field relating to rights-of-way and grading of the Original Section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and its subsequent extensions. more The majority are rendered in pencil or pen on sheets of engineering graph paper, and measure on average 32" x 38 1/4". Headings for either the Department of Transportation or the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission are printed on the tops of the various pages. Most drawings are grouped in sets, with each set pertaining to a specific location along the Turnpike's route. Data varies from sheet to sheet, and may include: final book number, county, district number, contract number, section number, route number, drawing number, and general descriptive information. Drawings are primarily cross sections with some construction plan and profile drawings. Typical subjects include: grading sections, channel changes, borrow pits, bridges, culverts, ramps, overpasses, road relocations, viaducts, interchanges, tunnels, tunnel approaches, toll plazas, service stations, and maintenance buildings. This collection contains notebooks executed in the field for the construction of the Turnpike, and is arranged by construction contract number, the volumes chronicle the planning more and construction of the Original Section, as well as many of the later extensions. Each field book is individually numbered, containing a wide variety of information such as diagrams, engineering measurements and data, notes, sketches, and weather conditions. The majority of the books come with an index card bearing the following information specific to each volume: county, division number, district number, dates, road section number, contract number, note taker, as well as a description of the book's contents. Many of the notebooks contain the Resident Engineer's Sketchbooks which tracked progress of work in the field on contracts primarily focusing on structures, bridges, and calculations. less

Types of files include: materials documenting the planning, work to be completed, awarding of, and preparation more of contracts for distinct projects relative to the Turnpike and its extensions. Blueprints and diagrams of contract-related structures and material, contract copies and drafts, correspondence, cost and work estimates, field work diaries, material test sheets and results, notes relative to contracts and their specifications, and notices to bidders concerning contract specifications are examples of files included. Contracts for construction of the Tuscarora Tunnel No. 2, pavement repair, roadway lighting at the Harrisburg East Interchange, signage, and tile underdrain from the Ohio Line to Irwin Interchange can also be found. These contract files include: executed copy of contract, list of bidders, agreement, bonds, proofs of various types of insurance, claims, change orders, accidents, completion certificates, daily diaries of work, photographs, material tests, core boring tests, subcontractors, Board of Arbitration, testimony, turnpike employee field inspection notes, geology reports, surveys, and correspondence. Types of contract projects include: grading, drainage, structures, paving, tunnels, ventilation buildings, maintenance buildings, interchanges, toll booths, signage, traffic line markings, gas stations, and affiliated electrical, plumbing, and heating for buildings. Images are arranged by subject, then numerically by contract number. Microfilm rolls were filmed in order by contract number. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission was created in 1937 by the Pennsylvania State Legislature, Act No. 211, with the authority to construct, finance, operate, and maintain a toll highway. The Commission consists of five members, four of whom are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate for four-year terms. The fifth member of the Board is the Secretary of Transportation. The powers and duties of the Commission are executed through an executive director and various bureaus. less
