This collection consists of a digitized copy of the 1977 pamphlet titled, The Great Flood of 1977: A Story of Catastrophe in the Conemaugh Valley.

Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was originally formed as a town in 1800. The city has experienced three major floods throughout its history and later became the site of more the Cambria Iron Company. In the 1860s, the Cambria Iron Company was the leading steel and iron producer in the United States outproducing larger steel and iron companies in bigger cities like Pittsburgh and Cleveland. This collection contains a corpus of books that highlight the historical significance of Johnstown. less

On the evenings of May 31 and June 2, 1998, tornadoes swept through Southern Somerset County, shocking local residents with the occurrence of such an unusual more weather event in this region of southwestern Pennsylvania. The tornadoes left significant destruction to the community of Salisbury and surrounding rural areas in their wake. That summer the Springs Historical Society recorded oral histories with six families who resided in or near the paths of the tornadoes. Working in partnership with the historical society, the Meyersdale Public Library digitized these histories, originally recorded on cassette tape, in an effort by both organizations to better preserve and share the stories they hold. less

Photographs of New Cumberland during the Flood of 1936 which occurred March 18-20, 1936 when warmer weather caused the winter's heavy accumulation of snow and ice more to melt. Situated along the banks of the Susquehanna River and bordered by the Yellow Breeches Creek, New Cumberland experienced extensive flooding from the east and the south. less

This collection includes photographs from the Hurricane Agnes flood of 1972 that completely destroyed Survey offices, lab equipment, and the library.

This collection features the logbooks and other records of the Johnstown Area Fire Departments.

On May 31, 1889, the breaking of the South Fork Dam caused the single greatest natural disaster in the history of the United States: the Great more Johnstown Flood. It is the personal accounts and rare photographs of the survivors which are the focus of this project. Published in 1889, many of the selected texts are no longer in print or available for public access. less
