Meyersdale's first responder community serves as a key component in keeping the area safe should an emergency arise. It's difficult to imagine the town without a more
fire department to serve it. As such, April 13, 1899, became a crucial date in the community's history, marking the formation of the current Meyersdale Volunteer Fire Department. From 1890 to 1899, the town was served by "The Alert Company" - the predecessor to its modern volunteer department. Selected from among several hundred fire department photographs held at the Meyersdale Public Library as part of its larger Meyersdale Republican/The New Republic collection, these images briefly document the history of the community's long-standing group of volunteer firefighters, who celebrated their 125th anniversary in 2024. The department has impressively grown and advanced in those 125 years of service, with its range of coverage expanding tremendously beyond the physical limits of Meyersdale itself. less
