Meyersdale Public Library – Captain William (Will) Lewis Judy
This collection includes photographs and correspondence pertaining to Captain Will Judy, a famous son of Garrett, Summit Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Born in 1891 and raised in this small coal town, Judy was a direct descendant of a Revolutionary War Patriot. Upon graduating from Garrett High School, he attended Juniata College, from which he graduated with honors both as a student and an athlete. Obtaining a degree from Chicago’s Hamilton College of Law in 1915, Judy volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1917 and spent a year in France, where he earned the silver star and attained the rank of Captain. After the war he practiced law and began a publishing company in Chicago. A renowned expert on dogs, he judged dog shows all over the world, wrote many books, and founded the magazine “Dog World,” published still today. Maintaining ties with his hometown, Captain Judy organized an “Old-Timers Reunion” which for decades drew large crowds back to Garrett every Labor Day weekend. Judy remains known today for the time , effort and money he contributed to numerous historical causes in Garrett.
