Meyersdale Public Library – The Meyersdale Republican Newspaper

Time Periods:

Founded in 1900 by Pennsylvania State Representative Samuel Austin Kendall – who would go on to serve seven terms as a Republican in the United States Congress, from his election in 1919 until his death in 1933 – the Meyersdale Republican served its community and surrounding areas for over 122 years. Renamed under different publishers, the weekly became The Republic in 1974 and finally The New Republic in 1991. Throughout its final nine decades of publication, the words “Not A Mere Newspaper – A Community Service” could be read near its masthead. Most of the images in this collection were captured for the newspaper’s 50th anniversary edition, published October 26, 1950. They show printing equipment and processes which have since ceased to exist. The longtime weekly’s final edition was printed on November 10, 2022.
