Our Flag

PA flag on flagpole

Pennsylvania's current flag design was officially adopted in 1907. The centered coat of arms (from 1777) sits on that blue field and contains the official seal of the William Penn family, the founding family of Pennsylvania. That seal is flanked by two draft horses and contains a ship, plow, and sheaves of wheat. A bald eagle sits at its top.

The draped ribbon at the bottom reads: "Virtue, Liberty and Independence," the state's motto.

PENNSYLVANIA STATE SONG

“Pennsylvania”

illustration: Ben Franklin conducting music

Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania,
Mighty is your name,
Steeped in glory and tradition,
Object of acclaim.
Where brave men fought the foe of freedom,
Tyranny decried,
Til the bell of independence
filled the countryside.

illustration: Ben Franklin conducting music
CHORUS

Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania,
May your future be,
filled with honor everlasting
as your history.

Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania,
Blessed by God's own hand,
Birthplace of a mighty nation,
Keystone of the land.
Where first our country's flag unfolded,
Freedom to proclaim,
May the voices of tomorrow
glorify your name.

CHORUS

Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania,
May your future be,
filled with honor everlasting
as your history.
